From
Hip-o records
Roy Buchanan was, his friends and admirers all said, the best-kept secret in Washington DC, a man who made angels sing when he played his guitar, and left an indelible impression upon everyone who heard him play.
Making music was his life; making records, on the other hand, was little more than an unnecessary intrusion. Even when longtime friend Charlie Daniels turned up, holding the key to the studio in one hand, and the promise of a Polydor recording contract in the other, Buchanan was not impressed. The sessions which commenced in October 1969 at Nashville’s Woodland Studios, would not be completed until February 1971, simply because Buchanan was unwilling to stay away from home for long.
The label apparently rejected the first album Roy delivered; who knows why. Roy had long claimed that he had pulled the plug on it, but that may have been a face-saving measure. In any event, it was shelved. Not long thereafter, Buchanan returned to the studio with a new producer, and cut the four tracks that close this album.
Everything fell into place. The four tracks - including the first mutation of that “Black Autumn” riff, tearing out of “After Hours” on its way to immortality, an early stab at the future legend “Roy’s Bluz,” and a magnificently raucous cover of “Shotgun” - still shiver with the electric excitement that crackled through the Polydor offices once the tapes were delivered. The label re-signed him immediately and, less than a year later, Buchanan would be back in the studio, this time to record an album that would put him on the path to being a rock legend.
