Elvis Costello &
Friends (including Jerry Garcia & Bobby Weir)
Monday
The Sweetwater
Mill Valley, California
Just prior to the Dead's
Irvine Meadows shows in April of 1989, Jerry (and Bob) sat in on
some tunes with Elvis Costello. For the most part the show was
exclusively Elvis Costello, and he sounds a bit intoxicated. But,
the songs are pretty catchy and well done, if not a bit sloppy at
times.
Jerry sits in near the end
of the show for the final 8 songs (of 25). None of the songs are
particularly noteworthy and Jerry's playing is a bit reserved. As
noted, this was definitely a Costello show and not a Jerry show.
Still there were highlights.
During the Riot In Cell
Block #9, during the jam part of the song Costello introduces each
of the guitar players on the stage and each successively takes a
quick run with the lead. First was Jerry Seiger, second James
Burton, and third Jerry Garcia. The first two solos are very well
done, but with Jerry's turn the approach was a striking contrast.
First off, Seiger and Burton did classic R&B. Jerry within the
first 30 notes had stretched jam beyond rock and into standard
JerryRock. As such, the jam hit the required points, but the filler
lifted the jam into one of those moments where the listener smiles.
Good for Jerry.
Also of note is the tune
with Sammy Hagar - Goin' Down. During the guitar solo on this Hagar
didn't stop moaning "Whoooaaa owww oooohhh" while Jerry
was attempting to do his thing. After moaning Hagar would stop and
scream out "Jerry!" Obviously this resulted in a pretty
flat solo.
Weir joins in at the very
end for CC Rider and Lovelight, which both are quite flat. Jerry
might have been having technical difficulty because his playing is
sporadic and not his typical self.
Obviously this isn't one of
those shows that are essential to have, but the Riot jam is pretty
cool.
