Dave's Picks Vol. 17
Selland Arena, Fresno, CA 7/19/1974

This release has a real nice mix and sound quality for a two track. The 1974 shows do generally sound excellent. However, this one appeared to be a bit better. Here's why. The low end really shows off Phil. Keith is nicely balanced in the mix. You can hear all of instruments and vocals quite well.

The key sentence of the opening paragraph is Phil. He has a monster show and that results in a superb release. This is one of those concerts where all the versions tend to be a little better than usual. Therefore, whether you love the song selection or not, this is a top notch show. I've played this multiple times and still want more. So much so, that it is making me crave more 1974 and some songs that were not performed at this show like Dick's Pick's Vol. 12 with "China Cat Sunflower," "Ship of Fools," "Morning Dew." Perhaps the first disc of Dave's Picks Vol. 2 - a great "Half Step" > "Roses" and another "China" > "Rider."

A few comments about the music. "Bertha" took time to get the sound going and was more like a rehearsal take, this resulting in Keith taking the spotlight. They sure played a lot of Country tunes, and they sounded pretty good, perhaps "Me and My Bobbie McGee" is the keeper if you must select one. I thought the "Weather Report Suite" was top notch. The beginning of the song Phil lays incredible bass down. The outro jam is nice, and it leads oh so smoothly to an excellent "Eyes of the World" > "China Doll." A lot of chatter about "Scarlet Begonias." The ending solo Jerry tried some new tones, apparently a one of a kind sound. Jerry's solo basically is two pieces. First was the experimental tones. After, he went back to his traditional sound for some more thrilling moments. Personally I like the traditional part of the solo better.

My ranking of this release is top shelf. Not at the very, very top, but on it. There a lot of great 1974 releases, the four releases from June and July are the best.

Grade A

From the Grateful Dead website

When the Grateful Dead hit the workingman's town of Fresno, California on July 19, 1974, they were undeterred by the blazing heat and inspired by the enormous "thundering machinery" they'd brought along. With the Wall of Sound, they felt they'd reached a whole new level of symbiosis. Can you hear what they heard on that fateful night? Find out when you reach the upper realms of auditory bliss with this "essential for any tape library." Witness Jerry breaking new ground with a spectacularly different take on "Scarlet Begonias." Follow Phil and keyboardist Ned Lagin into the future of electronic music with their "Seastones" set and orbit into deep space during the 30-minute "Playing In The Band." Prefer to listen with both feet on the ground? The second set will bring you back to earth and still have you dancing with a plethora of pleasers like "Brown-eyed Women," "He's Gone," and "U.S. Blues," rounded out with the band's one and only "Spanish Jam."

Plucked from the Grateful Dead's original tapes and mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman, Dave's Picks Volume 17 is, indeed, limited to 16,500 individually numbered copies.
