Dick's Picks
3 review
May
1977 is arguably the best month from the year and to many the best
month of the Grateful Dead’s career.
Since the third release from the Dick’s Picks series is
from that period, the Grateful Dead must recognize this is a special
segment of their career too.
At the time of this release Grateful Dead Merchandise did not
think the demand was high for three disc releases so this is a not a
complete concert, but a two disc compilation. The concert was
performed May 22, 1977, in Pembroke Pines, FL.
Both
of the discs from Dick’s Picks Volume 3 are so good it is
hard to decide which is better.
As good as the second disc is that is quite a statement, but
when you hear the “Sugaree” you may agree. In fact, it is tough
to find significantly better versions of any of the songs from disc
one.
The “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot” >
“Franklins Tower” is a king sized version; it opened the second
set.
The
second disc features the highlight of the show, which is a stunning
ensemble of some of my favorite songs in a sequence never repeated,
“Estimated Prophet” > “Eyes Of The World” > “Wharf
Rat” > “Terrapin Station” > “Morning Dew.”
This is truly a gem to be played frequently.
Do
not pass Dick’s Picks Volume 3 up!
