The Faces

Rod Stewart & Faces - The Final Concert Best of Rod Stewart and Faces: Legends in Concert

The Faces are unquestionably an all star line-up of musicians; Rod Stewart, Ian McLagan, Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane, and Kenney Jones. Upon disbanding in 1975 Stewart went on to a solo career (many of the faces play on his early records) and Wood was recruited into  The Rolling Stones. While Kenny Jones would go on to fill the shoes of Keith Moon in The Who, and McLagan and Lane went on to solo projects and session work.

Below we list compilations, and we've highlighted some videos available too.

Fans of the Faces will certainly be interested Jeff Beck's two albums with Stewart and Wood (bass) in the band, Truth and Beck-Ola and Rod's early career that is well represented in Gold and even better, the out of print The Mercury Anthology

The Faces Compilations

In 2004, a four disc Faces box-set, Five Guys Walk into a Bar was released. Its quantity of music is generous where each disc runs between 74 - 79 minutes. Further, a 64 page booklet with essays, track details, and photos is included. The music is not sequenced chronologically and many of the tracks were previously unreleased.

There are plenty of great cover songs included such as: McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed," Lennon's "Jealous Guy," Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain," performed a la The Rolling Stones.

One draw back to the Five Guys Walk into a Bar is that some of the material is not of the best sonic quality. Also, if they had a live disc instead of spreading the songs hear and there it would be more to my liking.

Single Disc
Casual fans may prefer the 19 track compilation The Best Of Faces: Good Boys When They're Asleep.

Double Disc
In 2007, The Definitive Rock Collection was released. This is the best value. All of this material is on the box set. This release takes 1999's The Best of the Faces, and adds to it.

Fleetwood Mac

Rumors Rumors
2 Discs
Fleetwood Mac has several worthwhile cd's to choose from. Their album Rumors as well as their self-titled debut would be our top recommendation.

Supplement those with their live album or DVD, The Dance, to pick up some of their missing key tracks as well as hear different arrangements of some of their treasures. This release captures the classic line-up in fine form. CD or DVD

Their two-disc, The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac is a good compilation. While its song selection is excellent as well as it having nice photos, essays, and in-depth song credits, it has two faults. First, the songs are not sequenced chronologically and a few songs are the single rather than album versions.

After Rumors, the self-titled is our favorite Fleetwood Mac listening experience.

Peter Framptom

Frampton Comes Alive! Frampton Comes Alive! (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
The classic album Framptom Comes Alive is the best listening experience for Peter Framptom in our opinion. I saw the tour promoting Frampton Comes Alive! He was sandwiched between the Beach Boys and Gary Wright. Peter Frampton was so well received, but I was shocked to see the Beach Boys gather even more cheers. The deluxe edition has four more songs and a different sequence.

According to Wikipedia, Framptom Comes Alive was recorded in 1975, primarily at Winterland in San Francisco, California and the Long Island Arena in Commack, New York.

If your seeking a collection, Peter Frampton - Gold grabs 32 songs at a reasonable price. This spans 1972 through 2003 and is good career overview of his solo material.

Meanwhile, Anthology: The History of Peter Frampton grabs a song from The Herd, five from Humble Pie, within its 16 tracks, which fill the disc completely. Only one song from Frampton Comes Alive so this doesn't duplicate that.

Aretha Franklin

Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings Rare & Unreleased Recordings from the Golden Reign of the Queen of Soul

Because Aretha's single and double collections miss several of my very favorite tracks we highly suggest her box-set, Queen of Soul. It includes most of her songs through This Girl's In Love With You as well as a fair sampling of material after that, of which that I am less interested in. It may cost more, but it is worth it, and used copies on Amazon can be very reasonably priced. The package includes a book with detailed credits with musicians, an Atlantic discography, photos, essays, etc. This is an excellent box-set!

Our Aretha Franklin page has a discography of her early material and other recommendations.

Michael Falzarano

We Are All One Where I Come From

Rhythm guitarist Michael Falzarano has a vast musical resume including stints in Hot Tuna, over 20 years, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage, for the past four. His third solo release is entitled We Are All One. Before spinning the CD I was expecting a heavy blues tone to the recording. While there are a few blues tracks and patterns it is much more of a rock album. The mood is very upbeat and positive.

The review is continued on our Michael Falzarano page

New Riders page - Michael Falzarano plays a key role in the New Riders superb 2009 studio album Where I Come From.
