Don't
Let Go |
After Midnight: Kean College, 2/28/80 |
|
Jerry
Garcia's solo career is quite diverse and we have expansive
coverage of both his electric and acoustic bands with frequent
updates in our Garcia
section. No need to repeat it on this page.
The
disc to the right, Don't
Let Go would be not be close to a consensus of
being Garcia's best electric band release, but it is my favorite. Garcia's interaction with pianist Keith
Godchaux gives this release its appeal. Since Don't
Let Go's release three other archival gems
with this core line-up have surfaced. All are superb, but I still
give this the top ranking of them.
Another
favorite, After Midnight: Kean College, 2/28/80,
doesn't have the Jerry and Keith interaction, Jerry is on
fire.

Hot Rod Guitar: The Danny Gatton Anthology |
|
|
Danny
Gatton is one of the hottest guitar players. He had the
ability to blend diverse musical styles from rockabilly, country, blues, jazz, rock, etc. He is
definitely a guitarist guitar
player. Upon hearing Danny play you'll hear some of the most
amazing guitar riffs. On occasion elements of
guitar legends like Jeff Beck, and Roy Buchanan arise from
within his solos.
Some
of Gatton's album are out of print. His two disc compilation Hot
Rod Guitar: The Danny Gatton Anthology is a generous 30
track overview and may be all a curious fan needs.

Genesis Box Set 3 (1970-1975) |
Genesis Live 1973-2007 |
| We are
bigger fans of the Genesis with Peter Gabriel than the Phil Collins
era. Though, the first Genesis album, post Peter Gabriel, Trick
of the Tail, is of our favorites.
Perhaps at a later date we'll be able to expand
our coverage and recommendation of Genesis.

Genesis Box Set 3 (1970-1975)[13 Disc Set]
Press Release:
In the beginning, Genesis began its epic journey towards becoming
one of the top-selling recording acts of all time with a series of
groundbreaking progressive rock albums that featured a pre-solo
career Peter Gabriel as lead singer. Produced by founding members
Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford along with Phil Collins -- who joined
in '71 -- GENESIS: 1970-1975 collects five of the group's
studio albums from their seminal Gabriel-fronted era, presenting
them as expanded CD/DVD editions featuring 5.1 and Surround Sound
mixes, rare and previously un-issued bonus audio and video, new
interviews and more. The 7-CD, 6-DVD box, which also includes the
exclusive CD/DVD Extras: 1970-1975, spotlights: Trespass,
Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The
Pound and the double album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
Following Genesis' hugely successful 2007 40th anniversary reunion
tour featuring Collins, Banks, and Rutherford onstage together for
the first time in 15 years, Rhino's third in a trilogy of box sets
exploring the band's extraordinary catalog is an ideal way to
rediscover their earliest masterpieces

Genesis Live 1973-2007 (8 CD/3 DVD)
Product Description:
Following the reissue of the 14 Genesis studio albums on the stunning box-sets Genesis 1976 - 1982 and Genesis 1983 - 1998 in 2007, and Genesis 1970 - 1975 in 2008, on 14 September 2009, Virgin/EMI will release Genesis Live 1973-2007, a box-set gathering the four live albums recorded by the legendary British group from 1973 to 1992. Featuring brand new stereo mixes*, the box set also includes the
long-awaited release in stereo and 5.1 of Live At The Rainbow 1973 only available with this
collection. Genesis Live 1973 - 2007 is a sumptuously presented box-set that includes:
Genesis Live, the band's first Top Ten album in the UK, recorded in Leicester and Manchester and issued in 1973, and featuring the classic line-up of Tony Banks (keyboards), Phil Collins (drums, vocals), Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute), Steve Hackett (guitars) and Mike Rutherford (bass, guitars). Genesis Live, for this box-set release, has been
extended to feature 5 bonus tracks recorded at The Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles on 24 January 1975 and the full album is also presented in 5.1 for the first time.
The double set Seconds Out, a Top 5 entry in 1977 that documented the group's Paris dates as a quartet with Collins on lead vocals following Gabriel's departure in 1975. The tour featured touring drummers Bill Bruford and Chester Thompson. Exclusively to this box-set, Seconds Out is presented in stereo and 5.1 versions. Three Sides Live, a number 2 album in the UK in 1982, mostly showcasing the Banks-Collins-Rutherford incarnation augmented by Thompson and guitarist Daryl Stuermer.
The Way We Walk, finally sees these two live albums re-sequenced as per the original show's set list. Originally released separately and entitled Vol I: The Shorts, which made the Top 3 in Britain in 1992, and Vol 2: The Longs, this was the band's sixth number one album, and their only concert recording to top the charts in 1993.
Genesis Live 1973 - 2007 has been designed to incorporate space for the most recent live Genesis release; the 2-CD set
Live Over Europe 2007. All albums feature brand new stereo mixes created by Tony Banks, Nick Davis and Mike Rutherford, whilst Genesis Live, Seconds Out and Live At The Rainbow 1973 all feature 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound versions. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

About Face |
David Gilmour |
|
We used to have David Gilmour's first two solo
albums, and were not blown away by either, though, they each have their moments.
If
you already have your stock pile of Pink Floyd and want more,
Gilmour's solo albums are worth consideration. The song compositions are
more simple than Pink Floyd, and there is plenty of
quality guitar solos.
David
Gilmour's released another solo album, On
An Island in 2006. He released DVD's, and some
live recordings of this tour.

Gov't
Mule Press Release
May 21, 2009
Gov't Mule is proud to announce that their latest record, 'By A Thread' is set for an October 27th release through Evil Teen Records. Their first studio album in three years, 'By A Thread' finds the Mule, lead guitarist and frontman Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist Danny Louis, and bassist Jorgen Carlsson, adding a newfound shot of soul to their classic power-band sound. The band is currently on short break between legs of a massive worldwide tour, which will resume September 9th in Salt Lake City. A full list of dates is below.
'By A Thread' was recorded largely in the Texas Hill Country at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio in 2009, the album’s origins are apparent from the first track, “Broke Down On The Brazos,” named after the nearby river, with a deep Texas stomp for the backbeat and featuring what Rolling Stone recently called "an incendiary duel with ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons." Perhaps less descriptively named, “Steppin’ Lightly” is another burner, set off by the soulful vocals and mind-bending guitar work of Haynes, who proves anew why Rolling Stone named him one of the Top 25 guitarists of all time, and why he was voted Best Rock Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine’s 2009 Reader’s Poll.
Gov't Mule has had over 2 million paid song downloads through their site MuleTracks and released nearly a dozen acclaimed and bestselling albums while emerging as a major touring force, routinely headlining pavilions, theaters, and festivals.

David
Grisman is truly a creative musician
While
most mandolin players stick to bluegrass, country, or perhaps
rock, Grisman's playing went beyond the norm and traditional
stereotypes.
While Grisman is a master of bluegrass, he also
incorporated jazz into his playing, forging un-chartered realms
and shaping what would be called Dawg music, and laying the
groundwork for new grass music.
Much
of Grisman's jazz influences are rooted in the Hot Club of
France that featured the legendary Django Reinhardt and
Stephane Grappelli. Truly, it is thrilling to hear the
renditions of some Hot Club material with the mandolin
replacing the acoustic guitar rhythm section, and also
taking some fascinating solos.
When
you combine the traditional bluegrass and jazz background you
have sort of a Bill Monroe meets the Hot Club of France. Much of Grisman's early
material focus on these inferences, and his
self titled debut is a
good place to start, where he features an all-star line-up of
musicians.
Grisman
has had a strong musical relationship with guitarist Jerry
Garcia. He added some mandolin on the Grateful Dead's classic
album American
Beauty. They also played together in several
bands; 1973's Old and in the
Way, 1974's Great American String
Band (a la Grisman's early solo work), and the numerous Garcia
Grisman releases. We have reviews of each of these diverse
albums that range from Dawg, to traditional American music, to
jazz.
The
Pizza Tapes session pictured to the right gets better upon
each listen. It captures David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, and Tony
Rice jamming in David's home studio on February 4 and 5,
1993.
Classic
Dawg DVD - The DGQ line-up with David Grisman on mandolin, Darol Anger on violin, Rob Wasserman on bass and Mike Marshall on guitar and mando-cello. This concert recording from 1983 was made at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
