Tucker Marshall
Tucker is one of the kings of Southern Rock. I was fortunate
to see them twice during their peak years. The first concert
was so good I couldn't resist seeing them on subsequent visits
to town.
Beginning in November 2003, and continuing,
Marshall Tucker have been reissuing their catalog with bonus tracks added
on, usually live performances of varying quality.

The Essential The Marshall Tucker Band |
Anthology: The First 30 Years |
|
Slowly I've been adding to my
Marshall Tucker Band collection. Some of their live releases are of
average and even poor sonics, too bad. Stompin' Room Only is tops in
the live arena.
Marshall Tuckers compilations are
plentiful. Two double disc offerings are displayed. The Essential The Marshall Tucker Band
focuses on their 1970's period and a third disc is included of five
live performances from a concert at Winterland, taped in September
1973. Besides the extra disc, a number of the other songs from
the main discs are live rather than studio versions, unfortunately.
Meanwhile, Anthology: The First 30 Years
takes a more comprehensive
look covering 18 albums, mostly studio recordings. The liner notes, written by Barry Alfonso, are a nice accompaniment.
This partners nicely with Stompin' Room Only.
Too, While I'm more familiar with their 1970 material, I did enjoy much of the
latter material.

Where A Country Boy Belongs |
Love Songs |
| There
have been a few niche Marshall Tucker releases. I've linked a few of
the newer ones that use the remastered tracks. I have Where A Country Boy Belongs
and enjoy it and it has some excellent songs I'd otherwise not have.
Though, I'd prefer more of a chronological sequence.
Some additional Tucker resources.

Our top
recommendations for Marshall Tucker are:
1. Stompin' Room Only
2. The Marshall Tucker Band Collectors Edition - 3
discs at a good package price, but the individual disc liner
notes aren't included. It does have a small booklet.

Frank Marino is an under
mentioned guitar star that started his career in the 1970's.
He's a guru of the blues rock and plays Hendrix material
superbly. I'm most familiar with his live albums so we've
spotlighted those as well as his greatest hits release.
The release Double
Live is really a single disc, in the LP days when it was
released it was a two disc set. The remastering makes
this a solid place to start. |

In Full Swing |
Hot Swing Trio Live in New York |
|
Mark
O'Connor is one of the finest fiddle players and he has played
on an endless list of albums. Among some of the top names include David Grisman, Chet Atkins, Dregs, James Taylor, Randy
Travis, Doc Watson, Stephane Grappelli, Waylon Jennings, Neil
Diamond, and
countless others. This is a very short list.
His
album In Full Swing is a tribute to Stephane Grappelli in the
tradition of the Hot Club of
Paris. Usually I am not blown
away by tribute type of albums, preferring the original. This
album, is the exception.
On In Full Swing, Mark teams up with guitarist Frank
Vignola, and Jon Burr
as they perform a few originals, but mostly traditional songs
in the tradition of swing. A few tracks Wynton Marsalis helps
out on trumpet and Jane Monheit adds vocals. If you like
Django Reinhardt and music of that style, you'll treasure
this.

Mad Dogs and
Okies
|
3 Pack
|
|
The CD is a tremendous collection of A-List
musicians who have teamed up to perform songs with an Okalahoma
flair.
Mad Dogs & Okies was the brain
child of Tulsa-raised Jamie Oldaker. While the drummer/producer
is not a household name, he is one of the most respected talents
in the country/rock/blues world, with an impressive resume that
includes three decades-plus recording and touring with Clapton,
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Leon Russell, and Peter
Frampton. He was also a founding member of the country-rock
Tulsa band, The
Tractors, which scored a triple platinum hit
with its 1994 self-titled debut album on Arista. But, with his
premiere Concord Records CD, Oldaker emerges from the shadows,
ups the ante, and delivers an amazing celebration of music from
his home state.
Contributors: Ray Benson, Bonnie Bramlett, J.J.
Cale, Eric Clapton, Joe & Ellen, Peter Frampton, Vince Gill,
Wiley Hunt, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Steve Pryor, Willis Alan
Ramsey, Tony Joe White And Zadig & Marcella

The Best of the Outlaws: Green Grass and High Tides
|
Bring It Back Alive |
|
The Outlaws trademark sound is a blend of country and rock,
with a strong three guitar attack. While Lynyrd Skynyrd had one
lead singer, The Outlaws had several members that would
contribute lead vocal duties. Another trademark is their vocal
blending and harmonies, sort of in the style of The
Eagles.
The Outlaws have a superb compilation called
The Best of the Outlaws: Green Grass and High Tides. This
includes all the music most fans seek in an Outlaws collection.
The liner notes provide credits, band history, and
photos. Perhaps some fans may want to supplement this with
live versions of the songs, Though their live album Bring
It Back Alive is not the
original band.
