Grateful Dead video notes:
A quote from a David
Lemieux, Grateful Dead archivist, interview from Crutchfield Advisor
discussing The Closing Of Winterland DVD: "... the April
17, 1972, show at the Tivoli Concert hall in Copenhagen, Denmark,
which is commonly referred to as "TV From the Tivoli". We
have a great video and multi-track audio for that show."
Grateful Dead Flash # 22
"Question: How were the bonus songs on The Grateful Dead Movie
DVD selected for inclusion on the DVD?
Answer: There was a
several-pronged criteria for the selection of these bonus songs on
the DVD. The first, and most obvious consideration, was that they be
excellent performances. We knew from the beginning that we were
limited to about 90 minutes of bonus songs on Disc Two of the DVD
(we ended up including 100 minutes), so we focused on several key
factors: were they songs considered for possible inclusion in the
original Grateful Dead Movie by Jerry ("Uncle John's
Band," which was originally slated to open to The Grateful Dead
Movie, "Sugaree," "The Other One" and its
attendant jams)? Did we have usable audio and film elements from
which we could do a proper audio mix and a proper film edit on the
song? Also key was a conscious effort to include songs that the
Grateful Dead were performing particularly well in 1974
("China>Rider," "Scarlet Begonias,"
"Weather Report Suite," "Dark Star"). With the
wealth of excellent material to draw upon, it bodes well for a
future release of more Grateful Dead from October, 1974 on
DVD."David Lemieux

Question: In the View From The Vault series, some of the DVDs have graphics and animation that cover parts of the music that we want to watch. Can anything be done to eliminate these graphics ? ?
Answer: For good or ill, the graphics and animation on the Views from the Vault DVDs are embedded in the video masters, and there is no alternate footage with which to cover these graphics. As much as we'd like to replace these graphics with shots of the band, we can't simply create footage that never existed in the first place. We are pleased to say, though, that the upcoming
Truckin' Up To Buffalo DVD is void of graphics and animation, and you are left seeing some of the most impressive band interaction and joyfulness that we have on video in the entire vault. Summer tour 1989 featured completely clean video feeds being recorded to tape, so the concerts we have from that tour feature the whole band, and nothing but the band.

Dark Star
Orchestra - 5/5/77
While
not the Grateful Dead, you may be interested in Dark Star
Orchestra's DVD, Live At The Fillmore. They're Live At the Fillmore is Dark Star
Orchestra's recreation of the May 5, 1977, show. I am not aware of
any Grateful Dead 1977 concert videos so this is next best thing,
and it is definitely worthwhile.
Dark Star Orchestra is excellent and this DVD will
silence any doubters. This recreation was recorded on May 8, 2004,
at the Fillmore in San Francisco, and features-- flashback, the
Grateful Dead's own Donna Jean Godchaux, who performs on select songs. There are more Grateful Dead
connections as the art on the packaging was created by Stanley
"Mouse" Miller and an original Dead sound crew member Bob
Matthews is the executive producer, and more (you'll have to read
the liner notes to find out).
So far I have watched the first set. The
highlights include "Sugaree," Supplication," and
"The Music Never Stopped."
Live At the Fillmore includes:
the DVD of the complete concert
a four page booklet
a two-disc audio companion.

Last Days of the Fillmore
Press Release
When the legendary rock impresario Bill Graham closed the Fillmore West in 1971, the San Francisco venue had become an institution, an integral part of the West Coast music scene in the '60s. Always the showman, Graham made sure the Fillmore West was sent off in a blaze of glory, scheduling five nights of concerts featuring bands like the Grateful Dead and Santana that got their start at this storied concert hall. Both the madness leading up to the shows and the concerts were filmed for FILLMORE: The Last Days, a documentary originally released in 1972.
The film stands as a vivid time capsule that captures an era in rock history when music had become a major industry and -- for some -- a huge headache. It delivers a gritty, behind-the-scenes look at the music business at a time when many artists were growing jaded by their success, demanding more and more. Disillusioned by the change, Graham decided to get out, pulling the curtain down with five days of concerts that ended on July 4, 1971.
In the end, the frantic preparations paid off with a host of marvelous performances from a range of artists who made up what was called "The San Francisco Sound." FILLMORE: The Last Days features highlights from all five nights, including songs by the Grateful Dead ("Casey Jones," "Johnny B. Goode"); Santana ("Incident At Neshabur," "In A Silent Way"); Quicksilver Messenger Service ("Mojo," "Fresh Air"); Jefferson Airplane ("Volunteers" / "We Can Be So Good Together"); along with performances by Boz Scaggs, Cold Blood, Hot Tuna, and Lamb.

Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music: Ultimate Collector’s Edition
Amazon.com
The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD. The film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and it's still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd ("half a million strong") expresses the human heart of the event, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, midconcert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then, of course, there is the music--a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Canned Heat, The Who, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana, and many more. Watching this ambitious film, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there--it's a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event. --Jeff Shannon

Live
at Shoreline
Product Description
On September 1, 1990, at the Shoreline Amphitheater, the Garcia Band performed a particularly poignant kind of magic. A Grateful Dead show was originally scheduled for that date, but the Dead's brilliant, passionate keyboard player, Brent Mydland, had died of an overdose at age 37 in late July. Rather than cancel the gig, the Garcia Band stepped in to deliver one of their most heartfelt performances. First Set - How Sweet It Is
To Be Loved By You, Stop That Train, Dear Prudence, I Shall Be Released, Run for the Roses, My Sisters and Brothers, Deal. Second Set - I Second That Emotion, Think, And It Stoned Me, Waiting For A Miracle, Don't Let G, That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day), Tangled Up in Blue. |
