Let There Be Rock Back in Black
My introduction to AC DC came with the release of their second album Let There Be Rock. What a great record, simple songs, electrifying, powerful, and exciting. Their later albums offered a more polished sound, but the simplicity of Let There Be Rock adds to its appeal, and of the AC/DC albums we've heard we think this is among their strongest output.

Certainly the title track is classic, and the way guitarist Malcom Young incorporates the classic riff of "Hot Rod Lincoln" in a totally new way is not brilliant, but certainly enjoyable. Overall the whole album offers a strong flow intermingling punk rock, heavy metal, and blues.

The late Bon Scott was replaced by Brian Johnson ushering the new era on Back in Black.

The box set Pandora's Box has been out since 1991. Second hand copies could be had at very prices. Lots of rarities as well as a focus on the early material. The sound quality is not quite what I'd expect.

Jan Akerman

10,000 Clowns on a Rainy Day Live
Acclaimed Holland guitarist Jan Akerman drifts from jazz to rock to blues.

Some of his recordings are hard to come by. However, his live two-disc, 10,000 Clowns on a Rainy Day, offers a good value and is easy to track down.

The Allman Brothers Band

Eat a Peach
The Allman Brothers Band's are clearly one of the great successes in rock music. Through the years they have meshed blues, country, and rock with an emphasis on jamming to the delight of many satisfied fans.

If you are looking for an introduction to the Allman Brothers Band, you can't go wrong with The Allman Brothers Band Gold; two discs of studio material through the 1970's and some great live tracks. Dreams is a good box-set that also showcases some solo efforts by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.

Eat a Peach is a classic. The Deluxe Edition includes a second disc with a concert from 6/27/71, highly recommended.

Reissues 2011 - Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawk
Ronnie Hawkins is a rockabilly singer who may be more famous for his backup musicians than his own music. His backup group from the early 1960s, The Hawks, evolved into The Band. His two most sought after albums have never been issued on CD, until now. What makes these albums so special is the guitarist on both albums is Duane Allman.

Ronnie Hawkins was originally issued on the Cotillion label in 1970. Along with Duane Allman, it also features  King Biscuit Boy and Eddie Hinton.

The Hawk was originally issued on the Cotillion label in 1971. Besides Duane Allman, it also features Donald
"Duck" Dunn on bass and The Memphis Horns.

Press Release
Gregg's new CD, Low Country Blues, is coming out January 18th on Rounder Records. It features twelve tracks -- 11 blues classics and one new song written by Gregg and Warren Haynes. The players include Dr. John on piano, guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, bassist Dennis Crouch and drummer Jay Bellerose.

The album was produced by T Bone Burnett and recorded at Village Recorder studios in Los Angeles.

All the photographs are by Danny Clinch, one of the top photographers in the music industry. They were all taken in the Low Country, around Gregg's current hometown of Savannah, GA. Danny has photographed everyone from Springsteen to Willie Nelson, from Johnny Cash to Tupac Shakur. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Spin, Rolling Stone, GQ, Esquire, the New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine, among others.

The CD will be available in all the usual retail outlets, and favorite online sources like iTunes and Amazon.

It will also be available at every Starbucks in the country, and Starbucks is very excited to have this new CD in their stores when it comes out in January.

Some other Gregg Allman solo recordings.  Searching For Simplicity from 1997 has a great version of "The Dark End Of The Street," to add to my collection of other great renditions (other favorites include Aretha Franklin, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Linda Ronstadt. Jack Pearson is the primary guitarist on that album.

America Live 1975
From Amazon

America are an Anglo-American folk-rock three-piece formed in London in 1970 by multi-instrumentalist/vocalists Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek and singer/guitarist Dewey Bunnell. America are most famous for their No.1 single "Horse with No Name".

The band released their self-titled debut album in 1971, but this had to be repackaged and re-released the following year after the success of the single "Horse with No Name", which was not included on the original release. The single propelled the band to worldwide success.

The re-released version of the album went platinum and produced another successful single, "I Need You". Following a move to the US the band released their next album, Homecoming, which included the Top 10 single "Ventura Highway" and helped earn the band the Best New Artist Award at the Grammys.

Their 1973 Hat Trick album was not as successful but they managed to co-opt former Beatles producer George Martin to work on the follow-up Holiday. Martin put his stamp on the album, adding strings and brass to the sound, and America made it back into the Top 10 singles charts with "Tin Man" and "Lonely People". Their next album, Hearts, produced the No.1 single "Sister Golden Hair", but this was to mark the beginning of the band's commercial decline.

After a few years, during which the band were well below their commercial peak, changes in personnel and musical style paid off in 1982 with View From the Ground. The album featured contributions from Beach Boy Carl Wilson and Argent's Russ Ballard. It made the Top 50, while the single "You Can Do Magic" took the band into the Top 10 of the Billboard charts. The next album, the Ballard-produced Your Move, had another hit single "The Border", but album sales failed to match their previous releases.

America are now being name checked and recognized by a new generation of artists. Janet Jackson used the "Ventura Highway" riff in her 2002 hit single "Someone to Call My Lover", and the band collaborated with Fountains of Wayne frontman Adam Schlesinger on their Here and Now album released in 2007.

Chet Atkins

Guitar Legend: The RCA Years The Early Years 1946-1957

Chet Atkins style of playing is not popular with the masses so he often gets overlooked, but his musical abilities are no doubt phenomenal and we consider him one of the best guitarist players. Atkins' largest influence came as a session musician and a record producer, and he is often credited with creating the Nashville sound. That's an incredible accomplishment. Chet's recording career is as impressive an anybody's.  A great overview is his two disc release from RCA records.

Chet Atkins was influenced by Django Reinhardt. His earliest material makes it obvious. However, he didn't just copy the riffs and personnel line-up. Rather, he had his style to the guitar arrangements. As for personnel, with the Colorado Mountain Boys he used a fiddle player, but after that just on occasion. He also used accordion and lots of mandolin.

Chet Atkins, The Early Years 1946-1957, on the JSP label, covers quite a bit of material is very reasonably priced. The release made his previous set, Galloping Guitar: The Early Years, irrelevant as it includes all the material on that plus another 40 or so songs for much less money.

Chester & Lester is a fine album. The two masters are backed by Nashville studio musician:
Piano - Randy Goodrum
Drums - Larrie Londin
Rhythm guitar Paul Yandell or Ray Endenton or Bobby Thompson
Bass - Henry Strzelecki or Bob Moore
Recorded in 1975 released in 1976
Liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Rich Kienzle. Very few overdubs on this fun filled recording session.
