Katy Lied
review
Steely Dan's fourth album Katy Lied
has
many of the characterizes of the album that preceded it, Pretzel
Logic, as it is an great collection of short soothing songs. At
this point of their career Steely Dan had discontinued touring to
become a studio band. They brought in a slightly more jazz
approach to this record than their previous ones such as the
outstanding track "Dr. Wu" that features great piano to
build the melody and a solid saxophone instrumental by Phil Woods. They also toned
down dirtiness of the guitar instrumentals, with the exception of
their classic "Black Friday" with a
searing solo on the opening track. Otherwise the guitar solos are
more tame, shorter, and take a jazz rather than rock approach to the
phrasing, such as on "Your Gold Teeth 2." It seems every Steely Dan
album has a blues track and this albums keeps the tradition with "Chain
Lightning." Michael McDonald backup vocals are strong on
several tracks, but none more than "Bad
Sneakers."
Katy Lied is another
excellent Steely Dan album. It has a heavy piano emphasis than any
other Dan album which gives it a special appeal to me. by Barry Small ©
