Two From The Vault review

The Grateful Dead’s Two From the Vault is the first live release from 1968 to leave their vault commercially. It is the complete concert from their August 24, 1968, performance at the Shrine Exhibit Hall in Los Angeles, CA.

Two From the Vault includes outstanding renditions of their originals as well as a few cover versions throughout the two discs.  The first begins with a blues number and not a five-minute “Little Red Rooster,” but a fourteen plus minute Pig Pen led “Good Morning Little School Girl.”   The “Dark Star” > “St. Stephen” > “Eleven” isn’t as mature as the Live Dead version, rather we get a preview of what would be the centerpiece of their concerts for many years.

My personal favorite part of this CD is the rendition of  “New Potato Caboose.” This is the first live version released and it is given a stunning treatment.  I haven’t heard a better one yet, and I would go as far as calling this a definitive version.

If you like the psychedelic Grateful Dead of the late 1960's Two From the Vault is a must have. by Barry Small ©
